“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.” –Proverbs 26:20
Written by the wisest man outside of Christ. King Solomon wrote this roughly 3,000 years ago but the truth in this verse still is the solution to contention today.
Talebearing is something that many Christians do and thy don’t even realize the effect that it has on their testimony and honestly their own well being.
Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, and Temperance. These are the fruit that a Christian should bear. However, if you hold onto gossip and spread it. You must kiss these fruits goodbye because you will not be able to bear these fruit. Love will turn too jealousy, Joy will turn to Comparison, Peace will turn to contention, Longsuffering will turn to zero patience, Gentleness will turn to wrath, Goodness will turn to pessimism, Faith will turn to doubt, Meekness will turn to wrath, and Temperance will turn to indulgence.
Notice the verse doesn’t simply just say “gossip” but it uses the term “talebearer“. Its the one hold not only spreads the gossip but holds onto it.
Don’t Gossip To Others About Others
Most Christians understand that profanity shouldn’t fly out of their mouths. They understand that it is very unbecoming of a Christian. Yet sometimes we forget that Gossip is just as bad if not worse.
We literally have to catch these thoughts of gossip and cast them aside. The devil and your own flesh puts these thoughts into your head and if you are not careful they will bother your whole being.
I have had moments in my life where I was caught up in gossip and during those times I noticed I had no peace. It caused me to hate others even when I didn’t want to hate them. I was not guarding my mind from this sin.
When you hold your tongue to talk about others you will find clarity. You will be able to love people like you are supposed to. Even when you feel like the other person is gossiping about you just remember the wise words of King Solomon Proverbs 2:7 ” He (God) is a buckler to those who walk uprightly.”
Don’t Gossip to Yourself About Others
The “Talebearer.” The one who holds the tale. The one who carries it.
2nd Samuel Chapter 6 mentions the time when David comes back with the ark of the covenant. When he comes back he dances with Joy because God had been with them to bring the Ark back. During his celebration Michal (the daughter of the former king Saul) looks out her window and despises David. Instead of catching this thought and casting it away. She lets hate fester. All fruits are thrown out the window because she decides to carry this “tale”. Because of this she forfeits her ability to have anymore children.
The sad part about her story is that she probably lived the rest of her lifer hating King David. The pinnacle meaning of her own life in her mind was to hate David. The funny part is this: David went on with his life doing the will of God and receiving the blessings.
Don’t Gossip About Yourself
Don’t say bad things about yourself. A lot of people don’t realize that when they do this they are still attacking Gods creation. Not just any creation but the supreme beings made in the image of God.
You are not merely someone who is to be belittled. When you down others you are downing the creator. When you down yourself you are downing the creator.
I know sometimes depression comes upon man and it seems the only thoughts you can have are heavy. But, understand this. God has placed you where He sees fit. He has given to you the ability that He has desired to give you. This is the most comforting thought to me lately. God literally gave you the ability to serve Him the way He has decided. Be thankful for what he has given you because it is perfect.
You are made in the image of the Most High and your duty is to serve him.
The summary of the 10 commandments is to love God with all your heart soul and mind. And to Love your Neighbor as Yourself. If you think little of yourself you will only be able to think little of others.
