It is more than simply resisting temptation\u2014it is learning to rule your own spirit instead of allowing your desires to rule you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book of Proverbs often gives practical wisdom for everyday life, but behind those practical lessons are spiritual truths that apply just as much under the New Testament. God is not only concerned with how we live outwardly; He is concerned with the condition of our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without self-control, it becomes difficult to faithfully serve Jesus Christ. Every Christian will struggle with temptation, but every Christian should also be growing in temperance through the power of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-3c15f6f3 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-extra-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.&#8221; &#8211; Proverbs 21:17<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-foreground-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-foreground-background-color has-background is-style-beaumont-diamond\"\/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its immediate context, this proverb speaks about financial poverty. A person who constantly pursues pleasure instead of discipline will often find himself lacking. We see this all around us. If you look at someone trapped in addiction, they become consumed with chasing the next high or the next moment of pleasure. Their desires begin to control every decision they make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, we should never look down on those who struggle with addiction. If it were not for the grace of God, every one of us would be in far worse condition. Yet the principle remains true: a life driven by pleasure rather than discipline leads to destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same principle applies spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every time we deny our flesh and choose to obey God instead, we strengthen the spiritual discipline of temperance. Like a muscle, self-control grows stronger the more it is exercised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the greatest marathon runners in history, <strong>Eliud Kipchoge, <\/strong>once said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Whenever you feel pain, do not let go of that pain. That is where success is found.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While he was speaking about running, there is an important spiritual lesson in those words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of our growth as Christians happens when obedience becomes uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you don&#8217;t feel like praying, that is often when you need to pray the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you don&#8217;t feel like reading your Bible, that is often when you need God&#8217;s Word the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you don&#8217;t feel like going to church, that is often when you need the encouragement and fellowship of other believers the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those moments of discomfort are often where God develops our character. That is where temperance grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-3c15f6f3 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-extra-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8221;  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of <strong>his own lust<\/strong>, and enticed.&#8221; &#8211; James 1:14<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-foreground-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-foreground-background-color has-background is-style-beaumont-diamond\"\/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>James<\/strong> teaches that <strong>temptation begins with our own sinful desires.<\/strong> Sometimes those desires are obvious sins, but other times they are simply a love of comfort, convenience, or laziness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of praying, we choose entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of reading God&#8217;s Word, we scroll through our phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of obeying what God has placed on our hearts, we give in to our own comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world around us is filled with distractions, especially for Christians living in America. Never before has pleasure been so easily available. With a device in our pocket, we can watch almost anything, buy almost anything, or entertain ourselves endlessly with the tap of a screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we are not careful, those distractions will slowly steal our time, weaken our spiritual lives, and dull our desire for God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognize what is competing for your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask yourself whether the things you enjoy are helping you follow Christ more faithfully or simply feeding your flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temperance is not developed overnight. It is built one decision at a time\u2014one prayer when you don&#8217;t feel like praying, one chapter of Scripture when you would rather do something else, one act of obedience when your flesh wants to take the easier path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every choice to obey God strengthens your spiritual walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A city without walls was vulnerable to every enemy that came against it. Likewise, a Christian without self-control becomes vulnerable to temptation and spiritual defeat.
